Dog Poop Bags: Recycled Plastic or Compostable?
Choose dog poop bags by your disposal route, then compare recycled content, compostability evidence, usable size, dispenser fit, and cost per bag.
Featured Options Compared in This Guide
Full specs & notes ↓For ordinary trash disposal, compare well-sized bags with a stated recycled-plastic percentage. Choose compostable bags when a receiving service explicitly accepts the bag and dog waste. The disposal route matters more than a leaf logo or the color of the film.
A bag still has to contain the waste and leave enough room for a secure knot. A material claim cannot compensate for a poor fit that makes you use two bags for each pickup.
Three buying routes
| Your disposal route | What to buy around | What to avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| General waste or a designated park bin | Suitable dimensions, reliable closure, disclosed recycled content | A biodegradable claim means quick landfill decomposition |
| Specialist pet-waste collection | The operator’s exact accepted-bag requirements | Acceptance of dog waste means acceptance of every compostable plastic |
| Ordinary home compost or food-scrap bin | Keep dog waste out unless an appropriate specialist program directs otherwise | A bag certificate makes animal feces acceptable |
EPA lists pet waste among materials to keep out of ordinary home compost. Its advice is more useful than treating “compostable” as permission to add dog waste to a backyard pile. EPA composting guidance

Earth Rated refill rolls
Earth Rated’s FAQ states that its current bags use 65% post-consumer recycled plastic and 35% virgin plastic. Standard refill bags measure 9 × 13 inches. They are a recycled-plastic option for buyers whose waste goes to general waste, not a compostable bag.
The unscented version has no added fragrance, although the brand says recycled material can have a slight smell. Compare it if added scent is unwelcome. The Earth Rated guide explains the current line in more detail.
Beco scented and unscented bags
Beco’s current FAQ describes its scented and unscented bags as 100% post-consumer recycled polyethylene. It lists standard dimensions of approximately 22.5 × 33 cm and directs used bags to park bins or general waste. This claim concerns that line; do not transfer it to a different Beco package without checking.
The percentage is higher than Earth Rated’s stated percentage, but these are manufacturer disclosures, not independently audited recycled-content measurements in this guide. The cited pages are Beco’s UK and Earth Rated’s Canadian pages; check the package sold in your market. Shipping, film use, and how many bags your routine consumes also matter in a whole-lifecycle comparison.
Bags for a composting service
BioBag’s Pet Waste Bags on Compact Roll is a documented pet-waste product in the manufacturer’s compostable range. The page identifies the bulk product as CPDOG. This is a candidate to discuss with an operator, not a recommendation to buy that bulk roll for a pocket dispenser.
Before buying any compostable bag, obtain the exact product certificate and confirm the service accepts it. This guide does not establish a current certificate for every BioBag variant or a universal breakdown time. The appropriate choice may be the service’s own supplied bags.
What the environmental labels do and do not mean
Recycled content describes feedstock. Compostability concerns breakdown under specified conditions. Neither means a used poop bag belongs in film recycling or may be left outdoors.
The FTC advises that compostability claims need evidence and qualifications about available facilities. It also warns against unqualified degradability claims for items going to landfill. A “90-day” headline is therefore incomplete without the test conditions and actual waste route. FTC Green Guides summary
Treat industrial and home-compost claims separately, and identify the certifier rather than mistaking a printed standard number for a certificate. An oxo-degradable claim does not by itself establish complete composting; fragmentation is not evidence that the material has become usable compost.
Check fit before ordering a case
Open one bag fully and compare it with your hand size. Allow for waste volume and a knot above it. Check that the roll turns freely in your dispenser and that the perforation can be separated without pulling hard on the next bag.
Compare current delivered price divided by usable bag count. Keep a small supply available in more than one walking kit so running out does not become the reason waste is left behind. Carry used bags to the designated bin; never hang them on branches for later collection.
