The most sustainable backpack is the one already sitting in your closet—if it still functions. Before reading this guide, check whether your current pack can be repaired if it’s failing. If you genuinely need a new pack, the options are better than they’ve ever been.
July 2026 Update
Manufacturer and retailer listings for the five models were reviewed in July 2026. Availability and prices can change, but two specification updates were notable.
The Cotopaxi Allpa 42L has been redesigned. Cotopaxi lists revised weight distribution, air-mesh shoulder straps, an exterior stretch water-bottle pocket, a luggage pass-through strap, and recycled fabrics for the current version. The July listing review showed a price around $250, but current price and discounts should be checked. A previous-generation model may omit the updated strap and pocket features.
Recycled-content labels are about to change. Textile Exchange published the criteria for its new Materials Matter Standard in December 2025. It becomes effective on 31 December 2026 and mandatory on 31 December 2027, consolidating the Global Recycled Standard and the Recycled Claim Standard into a single scheme. In practice: the GRS logo on packs today stays valid, but over the next 18 months it will be phased out on new products. The distinction still worth checking is that GRS requires at least 50% recycled content while RCS requires as little as 5% — so a brand citing only “RCS certified” is making a much smaller claim than it sounds like.
At the time of that listing review, Osprey described the Stratos 24 with AirSpeed suspension and adjustable torso sizing, while Patagonia listed the Black Hole 25L with 300-denier postconsumer recycled polyester ripstop and a recycled TPU-film laminate. Cotopaxi’s Del Día colorways rotate by design, so the delivered color combination may differ from listing photos. Confirm current price, stock, and specifications before ordering.
What to Look for in a Recycled Material Pack
Recycled content verification: “Recycled polyester” should be accompanied by Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification if you want confidence the claim is accurate. Patagonia, Cotopaxi, and REI Co-op back their recycled content claims with GRS or similar third-party verification.
DWR coating: Even fully recycled-content packs need water resistance. PFC-free DWR is available across most updated lines. Renewing DWR with Nikwax TX.Direct extends the pack’s water resistance after it’s worn down.
Warranty and repair policy: Published repair support can extend usable life when damage is covered or repairable. Compare exclusions, fees, parts availability, and whether the policy applies to normal wear; a “lifetime” label does not itself establish how long a pack will last.
Hipbelt load transfer: A structured hipbelt is designed to transfer some load from the shoulders to the pelvis. Whether it helps depends on fit, torso length, load, and adjustment. The Luzon omits a structured hipbelt; the Stratos includes one.

The 18L volume is intended for compact day loads. Capacity will depend on item bulk, so compare the pack dimensions and hydration compatibility with the gear you normally carry. The panel-loading design provides direct access to the main compartment.

Patagonia Black Hole 25L — Weather-Resistant Travel Option

The 25L volume works for day hikes and light overnight trips. Internal organization is minimal by design (one main compartment, a front zip pocket). Patagonia backs this with their Ironclad Guarantee and paid repair services through Worn Wear.
Osprey Stratos 24 — Ventilated Technical Option
The AirSpeed design suspends the pack body away from the wearer’s back to allow an airflow channel. The structured hipbelt is designed to transfer part of the load; comfort still depends on sizing, adjustment, and carried weight.
